Carpet cleaning the professional way

Handy Croissant member Phil Holliday, of PH Cleaning, recently gave a very interesting presentation about carpet cleaning. You may think this is a simple, straightforward task, but Phil revealed the tips of the trade concerning how to keep your carpets looking and feeling great for many years.

Handy Croissant member Phil Holliday, of PH Cleaning, recently gave a very interesting presentation about carpet cleaning. You may think this is a simple, straightforward task, but Phil revealed the tips of the trade concerning how to keep your carpets looking and feeling great for many years.

Commercial environments

Phil explained how in a big office environment, it can cost thousands of pounds to replace carpet tiles after your five-year tenancy. However, if you can demonstrate to the landlord that you have looked after the carpets and had them cleaned regularly, then the case for fair wear and tear can be negotiated.

Example

Assume you have an office of 10 x 30 metres = 300 square metres.

To replace the carpet tiles (assuming a typical price of £13 for each square metre tile) would cost 300 x £13 = £3,900 just for the tiles. On top of this you would have costs for removing the old ones and laying the new ones.

If you had the carpet tiles cleaned once a year at a typical cost of £200 that would cost you 5 x £200 = £1,000 over your five-year tenancy.

As a result, you could save a minimum of £3,900 - £1,000 = £2,900 over the five years.

Domestic environments

Having your carpets at home professionally cleaned once every two or three years can also save you money because it will extend the lifetime of your carpets, meaning you need to replace them less often.

In addition, your carpets and therefore your home will look much nicer when you have visitors.

Carpet cleaning - the science

Phil explained how dirt builds up over time and how that leads to wear and tear. Vacuum cleaners with rotating brushes will help somewhat, but unless you actually remove some of the ground in dirt, the carpet will deteriorate.

Phil described how PH Cleaning use a variety of cleaning agents optimised for the type of carpet. When PH Cleaning clean your carpets they first look at the type of carpet. This helps determine the typical cleaning issues:

Carpet tiles: Typical problem – crushed pile.

Foam-backed: Typical problem – stretching, often caused by hot water or solvents.

Tufted: Typical problem – browning.

Woven: Typical problem – shrinkage, often caused by over-wetting.

Other problems typically encountered include:

  • Unstable dyes.
  • Loose carpets.
  • Poor condition of carpet.
  • Shag pile carpet.
  • Cat or dog hair.
  • Excessively dirty carpet.
  • Lack of a convenient water supply when cleaning in shops.
  • Water marks (rings).

Acidity and alkalinity

The acidity or alkalinity of a substance is measured using the pH scale.

PH Cleaning uses a wide range of specialist cleaning agents covering the complete pH scale – acidic, neutral and alkaline. As a result, they can choose exactly the right cleaning agent to provide maximum care and efficacy for the task in hand.

Types of carpet cleaning

PH Cleaning undertakes all types of carpet cleaning:

Preventative

Uses bonnet buffing and is low moisture. It is quick and can be done in office hours.

Maintenance

Uses a dry-powder system or a fibre shampoo.

Corrective

Uses a hot-water extraction system.

Restoration

Uses a rotary pre-spray followed by hot-water extraction.
