The importance of data in HR

Recently, Handy Croissant member Theresa Marks of AddHR spoke to the group about the importance of accurate and reliable data for the HR function and the potential costs of not getting this right. She illustrated the subject with some case studies.

The importance of data in HR

Recently, Handy Croissant member Theresa Marks of AddHR spoke to the group about the importance of accurate and reliable data for the HR function. She illustrated the subject with some case studies.

Firstly, Theresa looked at the issue of maternity leave. She advised members on how important is to follow process, be clear with documentation, keep records and make sure you keep in reasonable touch with the employee during maternity leave – failure to do so could land an employer up in a messy grievance situation.

Secondly, Theresa looked at a case study involving redundancies. Redundancies can be complex and take up a lot of management time. She advised members that, once again, there are steps to follow, which include:

  • Communication to “employees at risk”.
  • Having a meaningful consultation process.
  • Using robust selection criteria for roles and employees at risk.

Thirdly, Theresa looked at the issue of resignations, or …. was that constructive dismissal? Theresa emphasised how important it is to deal with issues, follow processes, for example resignation acceptance letters, and use exit interviews to minimise any risk of comeback.

The cost of not getting HR right

The direct and indirect costs of poor HR can be quite staggering.

  • If you have an employee with a salary of say £25,000, the true costs of employment to the employer can be nearly double when you take into account all costs associated with employing staff.
  • A survey in HR Review in 2014 showed that it can cost around £30,000 to replace an employee (taking into account loss of productivity in the notice period and the time taken to get a replacement up to speed).
  • Legal and court costs for unfair dismissal can be in the order of £8,000 – £18,000.
  • Rising sickness days are costing UK business about £29 billion per annum, with the average employee taking 9.1 sick days per annum, at an average costs of £595 per employee, and leading to a 2% loss of productivity, per employee.

Sound HR practices can help your business save money in these areas and run more efficiently and profitability as a result of having an aligned, engaged and satisfied workforce.
